Mental health leader awarded OAM for fight against depression

10 September 2014

The National Mental Health Commission would like to congratulate Mr Michael Burge, a participant in the inaugural National Mental Health Leaders Project, on being awarded an Order of Australia Medal for his advocacy work. A soldier for more than 20 years, Mr Burge has spent his working life and holidays helping other soldiers.

Mr Burge was presented with the award by Queensland Governor Paul de Jersey at Government House in Brisbane and says he sees the awards as a win for all mental health volunteers. The Commission is pleased to have someone of Michael's calibre and experience as part of our leadership and development programme.

"Even the most disadvantaged Australians should be able to lead a 'contributing life,' whatever that means for them and this simple goal will be our touchstone and yardstick."
