Background to Personal Stories and Case Studies

In the process of putting together The 2016 National Report on Mental Health and Suicide Prevention, the Commission gathered examples of local, regional, state/territory and national initiatives that focus on improving mental health outcomes for people, families and supporters. These are supported by personal stories from real people and the mental health challenges they face. These stories and case studies are presented to help share insights, knowledge and experience to improve wellbeing for all Australians.

  • They demonstrate the diversity of approaches that exist in helping people lead a contributing life.

  • They demonstrate the importance of connectedness.

  • They are person-centred.

  • They focus on the key areas of reform.

  • They are evidence of effective leading practice.

  • They comprise transferrable elements.

In bringing together the case studies for this project, we used a considered process to showcase the diversity of mental health programs and tools across several settings. The Commission recognises there are many other examples of leading practice in mental health across Australia, and we encourage you to share your learnings with each other as you action and experience mental health reform in your communities.

We would like to sincerely thank all the people and organisations who provided their assistance with material for this project.
