Australian Mental Health Leaders Fellowship

Applications for the prestigious Australian Mental Health Leaders Fellowship closed on Friday, 11 May 2018. The Commission received over 200 applications and would like to thank all who applied. Applicants will be notified of the outcome by 1 June 2018.

The Fellowship is the first program of its kind in Australia, designed to meet the needs of emerging leaders with a passion and commitment to mental health.

There are 40 funded places available to successful applicants who demonstrate a capacity and willingness to improve mental health outcomes for all Australians. The first cohort of 20 participants will commence in July 2018, with a second cohort to follow in October 2018.

About the Fellowship

The prestigious Fellowship was developed and funded by the Australian Government, led by the National Mental Health Commission.

The Fellowship will incorporate a mix of experiential learning, reflective practice and group activity supported by expert facilitators, coaches and mentors. The educational content will be designed and delivered by a world-class University, with mentors sourced from a pool of experienced health managers and leaders.

Scope

The Fellowship consists of five components:

  1. Residential learning and networking workshops delivered by a prestigious university; 
  2. One week of experiential learning in a workplace environment providing exposure to leadership roles in various work settings, and the opportunity to reflect on participants own leadership style; 
  3. Diagnostic and assessment tools measuring leadership style, strengths, and capabilities; 
  4. A 12 month mentoring program; and 
  5. A collaborative group project conducted over approximately six months to assist participants to apply what they have learnt to practical and contemporary issues.

There will also be an ongoing Fellows alumni network. 

Who should apply?

The successful applicants for the Australian Mental Health Leaders Fellowship need to have  demonstrated commitment and engagement in leadership related to improving mental health outcomes in the Australian community.

This could include (but is not limited to):

  • Mental health service delivery in government, non-government organisations, not for profit organisations and charities, and roles involved in the mental health policy arena;
  • Clinicians and administrative workers in mental health, community health, hospital and health services;
  • Carers and consumers with lived experience and demonstrated capacity to influence outcomes; 
  • Employees in sectors where mental health issues are prominent (e.g. first responders such as police, fire and emergency and ambulance services, education, child protection, justice and corrections); and
  • Representatives from organisations and sectors that promote mental health issues, health and wellbeing including sporting organisations, media and communications, and community services.
